Gala Highlights Hope of Detecting Ovarian Cancer

A gala performance at Melbourne Town Hall in June will highlight Australian research into early detection of ovarian cancer. The disease is often described as a silent killer.

It is projected that over 1500 women across Australia will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. Most women affected are only diagnosed at a late stage with the disease being well advanced and treatment options limited. On average, one woman in Australia dies every ten hours from ovarian cancer.

Researchers at Prince Henry’s Institute (PHI) in Melbourne have already developed a blood test for detection of specific forms of ovarian cancer in post-menopausal women. A major goal of their work now is to discover new markers for the early detection of ovarian cancer in women of all ages. This present focus is most generously supported by the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) and has enabled a state-of-the-art-facility to be set up at PHI.

PHI is proud to present a charity performance to prosper ovarian cancer research in conjunction with its valued partners the Rotary Club of Moonee Valley and the OCRF. Together, with event partners Investec Bank, City of Melbourne, Music Theatre Australia and the generous Melbourne public, the objective is to raise in excess of $90,000 to contribute to the OCRF Rotary Club of Moonee Valley Research Scholarship and other equipment needs.

Internationally acclaimed Australian songsters Pot-Pourri will present a night of dramatic highlights from opera to popular theatre; including favourite hits from Carmen, Lakme, Rigoletto, The Pearl Fishers, Madam Butterfly, Turandot, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, Chicago, Broadway, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli and more. With a long standing relationship with Melbourne’s business community and music patrons alike, Pot-Pourri is delighted to be involved in this initiative.
